Help! I Have Dark Spots on My Teeth!

Posted on 12/23/2015 by Jonathan Woodyard
A woman suffering from dark spots on her teeth! Are you noticing that your teeth are developing dark spots that were never there before? This can be extremely concerning, as a dark spot could indicate a potential problem, and they just look unattractive. Find out what you can do about those dark spots that are damaging your smile.

Finding Out the Cause

After you notice dark spots on your teeth, it is important that you work with your dentist to find a cause, as this will be important in determining how to get rid of them. Some of the most common causes include:

•  Stains. Drinking wine, tea, coffee, and other dark liquids could stain the teeth. Additionally, smoking can leave behind a similar stain.
•  Cavities. A cavity or tooth decay can occur on the front or back teeth, and when they occur, dark spots may result.
•  Old dental work. Restorative dental work like a crown or filling can become weak with time. This will make your tooth more susceptible to discoloration and dark spots.

Getting Rid of Dark Spots

If the cause of your dark spot was a cavity or problems with old dental work, scheduling an appointment with your dentist should be your first course of action. You can get a composite filling put in that will match the color of your natural teeth, removing the dark spot. However, if there is no underlying problem and surface stains are the only issue, you can choose teeth whitening products to help improve the color of your teeth.

Whitening toothpastes are an affordable option, and you can also consult with your dentist about in-office or at-home whitening systems they may have to remove these stains.

If you have noticed dark spots on your teeth, be sure to contact our office to set up an appointment. We can determine the exact cause and recommend an effective treatment method.
