Choosing Healthy Snacks for your Child

Woman holding a bowl of fruit and vegetablesAs you walk down the aisles of the grocery store, it is easy for your child to get wrapped up in the bright packages and characters that beg them to choose the unhealthy, processed snacks. Not only are these snacks bad for their health, but they can damage their teeth as well. No matter how many times your child brushes his teeth, what he eats also plays a vital role in his oral health. Snacking is typically harder on the teeth because saliva production is not at its peak, as it is with a full meal, which means that the food that is consumed as a snack remains on your child's teeth until they are brushed. Here are a few good choices to give your child at snack time:

•  Vegetables - Any type of vegetable is the perfect snack because it has a low sugar content. Some vegetables, such as cucumbers and celery also contain plenty of water, helping any food particles to be washed away from the teeth.
•  Fruits - Limit fruits to those that have the lowest sugar content, such as raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, melons and peaches. The lower the sugar content, the better the fruit is for your child's teeth.
•  Cheese - Certain cheeses, such as cheddar, Swiss and Monterey Jack are known to increase saliva production, which enables your child's teeth to remain clean after eating a snack.

Of course, kids are going to want to snack on carbohydrates and sugary items once in a while, but if you keep those instances to a minimum, serve them with a full glass of water and encourage them to brush their teeth immediately following snack time, the incidence of tooth decay could be minimized.
